National Health Ethics Week

Improving the brain through technology: What is there to know and why should we care?

In celebration of the National Health Ethics Week, the National Core for Neuroethics will be hosting an outreach event to discuss new brain technologies that seek to improve learning and their implications for society.

In this interactive 1-hour session, we introduce the ethics of cognitive enhancement through a short theatrical play that highlights the pros and cons of using non-invasive transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) technology to improve memory and learning. Following the live performance, we provide expert demonstrations of how this technology works and facilitated group discussions about the ethical implications of using such devices for cognitive enhancement in the classroom and beyond.

Highlights:

  • Theatrical performance by UBC BFA Acting students.
  • Meet the experts:
Dr Nina Di Pietro, Post-doctoral Researcher, National Core for Neuroethics, UBC.
Dr Laura Cabrera Trujillo, Post-doctoral Researcher, National Core for Neuroethics, UBC.
  • Live demonstration of brain stimulation (e.g. tDCS) technology.
